UEFA EURO 2008 Stadiums: Stade de Suisse

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Stade de Suisse is located in Bern and is the home ground of BSC Young Boys. Stade de Suisse is also Switzerland’s second biggest all-seater stadium.

The history of Stade de Suisse begins another stadium: Wankdorf Stadium was demolished in 2001 and on its grounds there was built Stade de Suisse. This one had already hosted its first match (on the 16th of July 2005) when it was officially opened on the 30th of July 2005. The first match on Stade de Suisse was between Young Boys and Olympique Marseille and the host club lost. However, only 14,000 out of the total of 32,000 seats had sold.

An interesting strange and funny thing about Stade de Suisse is represented by the presence of one single, read seat among all the other black and yellow ones. This red seat is the first seat installed at the stadium, on the 20th of January 2005. Walter Eich, the ex-player and manager of the Young Boy had then the honour to unveil it. For this seat there are no tickets available, as an important personality is at every game invited to use it.

UEFA EURO 2008 Stadiums: St. Jakob-Park

Monday, November 26th, 2007

St. Jakob-Park, or “Joggeli”, is the stadium where FC Basel play. Having a capacity of about 42,500 seats, the stadium is now being renovated for the matches of the Euro 2008 so that it would fit more seats at the time. The sides of the stadium are divided as the four blocks of the stadium (A, B, C and D). However, “Joggeli” is a new stadium, as its construction had started in December 1998 and the first game on it was in March 2001. EUFA awarded this stadium with 4 stars, which is the highest award for a stadium of its size.

St. Jakob-Park is officially owned by the “Genossenschaft S.J.P.”, and managed by “Basel United”.
It has also 32 stores displayed on three floors and two restaurants (“Restaurant UNO” and Hattrick Sports Bar”) inside it. The parking space of “Joggeli” is had the capacity of 680 cars on two floors. However, the stadium can be reached also by tram, bus and even train, as it has its own train station.

St. Jakob-Park will host six of the Euro 2008 matches: three group games (including the opening one), two quarter-finals and a semi-final.

To build again “Joggeli” you’d need 220 million Swiss Francs.
