Although they struggled a lot, Austria simply couldn’t win

Austria went the same way as co-hosts Switzerland and lost their first EURO 2008 game in front of Croatia. Austria 0-1 Croatia.
Having no victory in major finals for 18 years, Austria seemed desperate to make their mark as early as possible in EURO 2008’s Group B. However, Croatia’s Luka Modric put an end to Austrians’ dreams.
“Today we must win!” – these words were on every Austrian’s lips before their country’s match against Croatia. But their wish remained nothing else than an unfulfilled wish. Luka Modric’s early penalty brought Croatia victory in Vienna.
Modric scored the only goal of the game in the fourth minute, this being the fastest penalty converted in the history of the finals. Modric was given this opportunity after Ivica Olic had been brought down by Rene Aufhauser.
Starting that minute, Austria had plenty of time to do something about it, but it seems that they simply weren’t able to.
