France: Trezeguet not Included in Domenech’s 30-man Provisional Squad

Raymond Domenech, France’s national football team’s coach, made public the provisional list of 30 players for UEFA EURO 2008 during a press conference at the French Football Federation headquarters in Paris. Surprisingly or not, Juventus’ striker David Trezeguet was not chosen by coach Domenech to be part of this provisional 30-man squad.

Another surprise, this time a positive one, was the inclusion of AS Saint-Etienne’s striker Bafetimbi Gomis in France’s national football team. Gomis was selected for the first time in the national team, as he impressed coach Domenech after a promising season that included no less than 16 league goals.

“This is not a surprise as we have been following him for a while now and he fully deserves to be in this provisional squad,” said Raymond Domenech about Bafetimbi Gomis’ inclusion in the national team. The coach didn’t have too much to say about David Trezeguet’s absence. “It is a choice which is more about the organisation of the team,” he said.

Among others Raymond Domenech chose France’s Player of the Year and Ligue 1 top goalscorer, Karim Benzema, and goalkeeper Steve Mandanda for his provisional team for UEFA EURO 2008.

The 30-man provisional team will be starting preparing for UEFA EURO 2008 in Tignes, in the French Alps, and then will play three friendly games before the finals in Austria and Switzerland.
