At EURO 2008 Poland met Germany for the second time in three summers. In 2006, Poland faced Germany in the finals of FIFA World Cup. Germany won at the time, and they did the same also at EURO 2008.
This time, however, it was Lukas Podolski, a Poland-born football player that broke his native country’s heart with two remarkable goals. This way, Germany won EURO 2008’s Group B’s first game, while Poland was left alone with their darkest thoughts ever! Will they be better than Croatia?

Austria went the same way as co-hosts Switzerland and lost their first EURO 2008 game in front of Croatia. Austria 0-1 Croatia.
Having no victory in major finals for 18 years, Austria seemed desperate to make their mark as early as possible in EURO 2008’s Group B. However, Croatia’s Luka Modric put an end to Austrians’ dreams.

Lukas Podolski was the man of the game in the match against Poland. He scored twice and thus gave Germany an ideal start to their EURO 2008 Group B campaign. He struck in the 20th and 72nd minutes in Klagenfurt, in a move that earn himself the Carlsberg Man of the Match award.
Podolski’s coach, Joachim Low, his mates, as well as Germany’s thousands of fans have surely enjoyed this brilliant start at EURO 2008. Only Lukas Podolski himself has had mixed feelings about it! Why’s that?

After resolving his club future, player Jens Lehmann stated that he was “completely focused” on Germany’s campaign at EURO 2008. Lehmann agreed on Tuesday to become the player of VfB Stuttgart, which he will join after the tournament in Switzerland and Austria.
However, the 38-year-old goalkeeper is now focused on EURO 2008, as he wants Germany to win the title. “Naturally I’m completely focussed ahead of this great tournament,” said Jens Lehmann.

The International Broadcast Centre, simply known as IBC, was officially opened in Vienna on 3 June.
The opening of this center marks an important step in the history of football broadcasting, as UEFA will produce the television signal for EURO 2008 for the first time in the history of this popular tournament. UEFA will be able to do this through UEFA Media Technologies SA, its 100% owned subsidiary.
With the occasion of the official opening of the International Broadcast Centre in Vienna, Michel Platini, UEFA President, switched on the TV video feeds from all the Austrian and Swiss venues in the Centre’s Master Control Room, which represents “the hub” of all video and audio signals coming and going through fibre and satellite from venues and other important sites.

Another one gets injured in Russia’s national football team, adding to Russian fans’ worries.
Vladimir Gabulov limped out of training on Tuesday after a collision with another player, Denis Kolodin. Andrei Grishanov, the team’s doctor said that Gabulov sustained a very painful knock to his thigh. “We do not think it is anything serious but we will be able to say for sure on Wednesday,” the doctor also added.
