Russia: Pavel Pogrebnyak Back in the Game!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

After scaring both mates and fans that he might not play at EURO 2008 because of injury, Pavel Pogrebnyak was confirmed by Russia’s national football team’s coach to eventually play at EURO 2008.

Pavel Pogrebnyak raised concerns after he picked up an injury during his team 2-1 friendly against Serbia last Wednesday. He started to complain of pain at one of his knees and he was sent to Munich for scans. At that moment it was thought that Pogrebnyak might miss EURO 2008 because of the injury, which had appeared to be more severe that initially thought.

Russia: Pavel Pogrebnyak Picks Up Severe Knee Injury

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Russia might lose player Pavel Pogrebnyak, who has picked up a severe injury at his left knee during his team’s match against Serbia. A few hours after the game, Pogrebnyak was revealed to have gotten a problem with the meniscus in the injured knee. The diagnosis seems to be worse than one has ever expected. Russia’s victory against Serbia was thus saddened by Pogrebnyak’s injury.

After the match, the 24-year-old FC Zenit St. Petersburg player went to Munich alongside Russia’s team doctor, Andrei Grishanov, for precautionary tests. “He has a little irritation of the meniscus and a little rupture of the back part of it,” said Russia’s national football team’s coach Guus Hiddink. He also added that Pavel Pogrebnyak “won’t be training in the next few days but it is possible he will play at EURO. We will have a more precise ruling on him in the next few days. Even if the information about this injury is confirmed, I am not planning to call up another player instead of him.”
After opening the scoring in the 2-1 win against Serbia, Pogrebnyak signaled to the bench that he was in pain. Hiddink took him off immediately. “I didn’t understand [what had happened],” Pavel Pogrebnyak said. “There was no challenge but suddenly my left knee was in a lot of pain,” he added.

So, because of this injury that Pogrebnyak picked up just a few days before Russia’s first match for EURO 2008, the 24-year-old player might be forced to watch the games from the bench.

Russia: Sergei Semak Named in Russia’s 25-Man Squad for EURO 2008

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

Sergei Semak, 32 years old, was surprisingly included by coach Guus Hiddink in his draft 25-man squad for the finals of UEFA EURO 2008.

Although Semak had a total of 43 appearances for Russia and has scored four times for his county in different international tournaments, he hasn’t played for the national team since May 2006.

But Semak seems to have been lucky enough to have an extraordinary performance with Russian Premier-Liga leader FC Rubin Kazan this season, which drew coach Guus Hiddink’s attention. Thus, Hiddinks chose to include Sergei Semak in his 25-man squad for UEFA EURO 2008.
